Several police districts in and around the Portland Oregon area have reported receiving numerous identity theft complainants possibly tied to a data breach at Michael’s Craft Store.
This May the nationwide craft products chain disclosed that the PIN pad machines used in some 90 of their stores around the country had been tampered with. Skimming devices had been added to the machines allowing thieves access information on the magnetic stipe. The affected stores included some in Oregon.
A detective in the Eugene Police Department noticed that there were a number of cases where money was being taken out of bank accounts by unknown persons. He had heard about the breach at chain and when asked many of the victims reported that they had shopped at Michael’s.
Since this was a major breach involving debit cards the US Secret Service is the lead on the investigation. The cases in Oregon have been passed on to them for further scrutiny. At this point the it is unclear how many cases there are nationwide.
Numerous customers of Michael’s in the Oregon area have reported the losses. Their financial institutions have absorbed the losses for their customers. They are also monitoring additional customer’s cards and may block access to them as well.
