Daughter of Malcolm X Sentenced In Identity theft Case

Malikah Shabazz the youngest daughter of equal right activist Malcolm X has been sentenced to five years probation for stealing the identity of a family friend.

The North Carolina resident was sentenced in the State Supreme Court in Queens, NY for using the identity of a 70 year old New York City women to open credit cards. The women’s late husband was one of Malcolm X’s bodyguards. He had been present when Malcolm X was assassinated in 1965.

Shabazz charged $55,000 in illegal purchases on the credit cards she illegally procured. She pleaded guilty to the charges in June. As part of her sentence she is ordered to pay back the full amount stolen.

Based on court records she had told the victim that she needed her personal information for paperwork in a child care matter. In a statement DA Richard Brown said “The defendant, who preyed upon the trusting nature of a once close family friend, has admitted her guilt in committing a serious felony offense and will be ordered to make her victims financially whole.”

During the sentencing hearing she wore a black T-shirt and sported black thick glasses similar to the type her father was know to wear. Once the court proceedings were done she left immediately, declining to comment.

The crime is another sad development for a family who has never fully recovered from the activists assassination.
